Retargeting: how to win back customers who hesitate

Most visitors leave without buying. Retargeting brings them back — often for just a few dollars per sale. Here's how it works in Morocco.

On a Moroccan website, more than 95% of visitors leave without buying on their first visit. They compare, they hesitate, they get interrupted. Retargeting puts your offer back in front of them at the right moment. It's almost always the advertising that pays back the most, for the smallest budget.

What is retargeting? A concrete example

Retargeting — also called remarketing — means showing your ads again only to people who already know you: they visited your website, added a product to their cart or interacted with your page. Instead of talking to strangers, you follow up with people who are already interested.

A concrete example: a woman in Casablanca sees your $45 / €45 dress on Instagram, clicks, looks at two styles, then closes the app to reply to a WhatsApp message. She'll never come back on her own. With retargeting, she sees that dress again in her feed the next day — sometimes with free delivery front and center. That small reminder turns hesitation into an order.

Why it's often the most profitable ad

An acquisition campaign pays to reach strangers: it's necessary, but more expensive. Retargeting, on the other hand, speaks to a “warm” audience, so:

  • The conversion rate is much higher — these people have already shown real interest.
  • Cost per sale drops — you're no longer paying to convince people from scratch, just to remind them.
  • The budget stays small — the audience is limited, so $49–149 / €49–149 per month is often enough.
  • The return is measurable — you see exactly how many sales you win back for every dollar invested.
💡 Retargeting doesn't replace acquisition, it complements it. Always keep a budget to attract new visitors — otherwise there's no one to retarget. See our approach to Meta ads in Morocco.

How it works (pixel, audiences)

Everything relies on the retargeting pixel. It's a piece of code, installed on your website, that records who comes and what they do. From that data, Meta or Google builds audiences — lists of people to retarget.

The mechanism works in three steps: the visitor lands on your site, the pixel “tags” them, then your ads follow them on Facebook, Instagram or the Google network. Without a pixel, there's no way to retarget website visitors. If you haven't set one up yet, start with our guide the Meta Pixel: what it is and how to install it.

The types of audiences to retarget

Not all audiences are equal. We rank them from hottest to lukewarm:

AudienceInterestPriority
Abandoned cart / orderVery high — one step away from buyingHigh
Product page visitorsHigh — interested in a specific offerHigh
Website visitors (30 days)Medium — they know youMedium
Insta / Facebook engagementMedium — no website neededMedium

The abandoned cart is retargeting's goldmine: the person was ready to pay. A simple reminder, sometimes with a promo code, wins back a large share of those sales. The engagement audience (people who commented on, saved or watched your videos) is valuable when you don't have a website yet — useful for shops that sell through WhatsApp.

Best practices (frequency, message, exclusions)

  1. Cap the frequency — no more than 3 to 4 impressions per person per week. Beyond that, you annoy people and burn budget.
  2. Change the message — don't show the same ad again: add a customer review, a guarantee, delivery details or a small perk (–10%, free delivery).
  3. Exclude buyers — remove people who have already ordered from the audience. There's no point paying to sell them what they already have.
  4. Segment by recency — yesterday's visitor doesn't need the same message as someone who visited 20 days ago.
  5. Reassure — in Morocco, cash on delivery and a visible WhatsApp number remove the last bit of hesitation.
⚠️ Retargeting is only powerful if the pixel is set up correctly and your audiences are clean. A badly installed pixel retargets just anyone — and wastes your money.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Retargeting everyone the same way — an abandoned cart and a casual visitor don't deserve the same budget or the same message.
  • Forgetting to exclude customers — your ads keep chasing people who have already bought.
  • Bombarding people — too many impressions turn a reminder into harassment.
  • Launching without acquisition — without new visitors, the audience dries up within a few weeks.
  • Ignoring the fundamentals — retargeting multiplies a good e-commerce strategy, it doesn't rescue a shaky offer. Our guide to e-commerce marketing in Morocco lays the groundwork.

Set up properly, retargeting becomes the most profitable part of your budget — the part that wins back, every month, the sales you used to let slip away.

Frequently asked questions

Is retargeting legal in Morocco?

Yes. Retargeting relies on the Meta or Google pixel, like most online advertising. You simply need to display a clear cookie consent banner on your website and comply with Law 09-08 on the protection of personal data.

What budget do you need to launch retargeting?

Retargeting reaches few people, so it costs little. $49–149 / €49–149 per month is often enough if your website already gets traffic. It's usually run alongside an acquisition budget of at least $299 / €299 per month.

Do you need a website to do remarketing?

Not necessarily. You can retarget people who interacted with your page or Instagram account, or watched your videos. But to retarget website visitors or abandoned carts, you need a website with the Meta Pixel installed.
